Pair Reversible Hand Screens
Catalog No: A0641
Face screens, or fans, were used during the 17th & 18th centuries to shield m'lady's face from the heat of candlelight and the fireplace. Many people wore smallpox scars and the makeup of the day was mostly wax, which melted in such heat. These lovely items protected the face from that heat and flattered the holder.
In very good, stable condition each screen has one side with chinoiserie design and the opposite side with the scroll design. Some of the original gilded design is intact.
