In the 1850s the exclusive Regent Street, London, shop of Howell, James & Co., jewelers to the Queen and the Prince & Princess of Wales, offered this domed coromandel box with its incredible etched brass work detail.
Howell James, makers of exquisite jewelry and decorative items, were proponents of the revivalists movement, preserving and reviving the traditional methods of craftsmanship and skills during the advent of industrialization.
As one of the primary exhibitors at The Great Exhibition of 1851, they exhibited prized items such as these to the nearly 6 million people who attended the exhibit held in the specially built Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London.
Today it is in excellent antique condition with its original working key. There are a few bits of the saw-pierced brass work missing, but only if you look hard.
