Since the mid 16th century, cabinetmakers have been utilizing upholsters to add the element of nail head trim to furniture designs. Their early goal was to cover ‘inferior’ timber or to increase the value of the item to the client. Nail head application is a laborious, time consuming task. Each nail is applied by hand and it takes a true artisan to get everything just right.
Our goal was to design piece that would accentuate antiques in the room or simply appeal to the eye because of its beauty.
The main image here shows a cupboard on stand covered in hand stained cowhide and decorated with hand studded brass nail head trim and heavy hand cast hardware. Other images show the cabinet in a variety of sizes plus an example of a paneled non-leather version. Often we have the nail head trim plated to appropriately accent the color of the leather selected.
The oak base has hand turned and carved barley twist legs ending in the flattened bun feet popular in northern Europe. The front drawer can be a drop front with slide for keyboard use as an office-cupboard.
